YouTube Shorts is a way for anyone to connect with a new audience using just a smartphone and the Shorts camera in the YouTube app. YouTube’s Shorts creation tools makes it easy to create short-form videos that are up to 3 minutes long with our multi-segment camera.
Changes to Shorts views count
Starting 3/31/2025, we're updating how Shorts views are counted. Views will count the number of times a Short starts to play or replay, with no minimum watch time requirement. This update will give creators a more complete view of how their short videos are doing, especially when they share content on different platforms.
We will keep the existing Shorts view metric, now called “Engaged views,” in YouTube Analytics so you can see how many viewers chose to continue watching your video. You can use “Engaged views” to compare the performance across all of your Shorts in YouTube Analytics. This metric is also available for videos and live streams, but it is the same as views.Learn how to compare your performance.
This change will not directly impact the YouTube Partner Program (YPP) eligibility and Shorts ad revenue sharing. They will both be based on "Engaged views." You can upload vertical videos saved to your computer or smartphone as Shorts. You can also record a Short from the YouTube app on a mobile device. Here’s how:
- Sign in to the YouTube app
. - Tap Create and select Short.
- Hold Capture or tap it to start recording and then again to stop.
- Note: You can changethe duration on theupper-right corner.
- Once you’re done recording, you can:
- Add music, apply filters, or use other effects to enhance your recording.
- Tap Undo to remove the previous video clip you recorded or tap Redo to add it back.
- Tap Close Delete or Save and exit.Saving a draft at this point saves any edits you've made.
- Tap Done . From here, you can:
- Preview your video.
- Add sounds, text-to-speech, and other effects.
- Tap Back to return to the record screen.
- Tap NEXT to add details to your video.
- From this screen, add a title (max 100 characters), and choose settings, like video privacy.
- Note: The default video privacy setting for creators aged 13–17 is private. If you’re 18 or older, your default video privacy setting is set to public. Everyone can change this setting to make their video public, private, or unlisted.
- Tap Select audience “Yes, it’s made for kids" or "No, it’s not made for kids" to choose your audience. Learn more about made for kids.
- From this screen, add a title (max 100 characters), and choose settings, like video privacy.
- Tap UPLOAD SHORT to publish your Short.

How will viewers find my Shorts?
Viewers may find your Shorts by tapping Shorts 
at the bottom of the YouTube app. From the player, they can scroll to watch a never-ending stream of videos in the Shorts Feed.
They may also find Shorts:
- In search results across YouTube, including on most smart TVs, game consoles, and other streaming devices.
- On the YouTube homepage.
- Featured on your channel homepage.
- By checking their Subscriptions.
- In their notifications.
Wherever they find them, subscribers gained from watching your Shorts count toward Creator Awards Program milestones.
Can I earn money from my Shorts?
Yes, you can now earn money with YouTube Shorts. To become eligible for the YouTube Partner Program (YPP) with Shorts, you must gain 1,000 subscribers with 10 million valid public Shorts views in the last 90 days.
